Introduction

Unfortunately, weight-gain, overweight and obesity are reaching very dangerous levels, destroying many people’s lives and driving down the UK-economy, therefore, a much smarter, better and integrated strategy and approach is required in order to tackle weight gain and obesity successfully.

Firstly…

When it comes to obesity, weight gain, and weight management, we need to understand what undesirable weight gain really means.  Everyone has some ideas but what does weight gain, being overweight and obesity really mean?

Unhealthy weight gain means a very slow metabolism, non-existent or slow detoxification, insulin resistance and dyslipidaemia, increased chemical load, impaired immune system, and possible higher C-reactive protein (an inflammation marker), increased Metabolic Disease Markers and risk of diabetes, cardio-vascular disease and even cancer to name just a few.

But before going any further let’s look at a few dangerous diseases and their link to weight gain and obesity:

“Conditions and diseases closely related to obesity include metabolic syndrome, heart disease and stroke, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer.” – Centers for Disease Control and Prevention –

Weight gain and Obesity scientifically are proven to increase body-inflammation and the Risks for Metabolic Syndrome: Extra weight, an increased body circumference and abdominal adiposity reduces our breathing patterns, body-oxygenation and body-circulation, and decreases immunity that supports the body; this creates a dangerous systemic pro-inflammation environment!

What the official statistics say about weight gain and obesity: The proportion of adults with a raised waist circumference in 2012 was 34% among men and 45% among women and is going up while the proportion of adults that were overweight including obese was 48.6% in men and 57.2% in women.  In 2012 over 26% of women and 19% of men were classified as inactive while the proportion of adults with an abnormal BMI was 49.5% among men and 40.6% among women.  This figure illustrates the great danger that undesirable weight gain poses.

Scientific research exposes the links that exist in between diabetes, hypertension and dyslipidaemia and that increased weight gain and a raised waist circumference and obesity are creating serious Metabolic Complications, sky-rocketing all Metabolic Disease Markers, Metabolic Syndrome and many other dangerous diseases.

Please see below a few types of metabolic complications created by excess of weight, weight gains and abdominal obesity.

But, undesirable weight gain and obesity is far more dangerous because there is a large number of conditions which are made much worse by it such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, autoimmune disorders, and arthritis. There are also lifestyle factors which are equally important and need to be taken into consideration as excess weight distorts eating patterns and sleeping patterns and increase pain levels, depression and anxiety, please see below:

Obesity – Major Risk Factor

Figure 2: Scientific correlations of complications and diseases created by the danger of Obesity

Obesity – Major Risk Factor for Type II Diabetes: Diabetes is a very serious disease which leads to amputation and is terminal in some cases. Both type 1 and type 2 diabetes are quickening our body destruction and aging. Insulin plays a crucial role in our carbohydrate metabolism and is an important hormone composed of  51 amino acids synthesized, packaged, and secreted in pancreatic β-cells all found in the islets of Langerhans.

Western diets don’t contain enough good quality complex carbohydrates and are often fat centred, which hugely promotes our body-fat-storage. Excess fat on the body is dangerously interfering with insulin’s actions. Our pancreas and certain adipose (insulin-sensitive-tissues) tissue are regulating glucose levels in the human blood via insulin-secretion; this affects the way we feel and perform and creates imbalances in between our energy expenditure  and energy intake and our energy levels. Insulin facilitates glucose utilization in peripheral tissues and abnormal insulin levels increase the risk of glucose intolerance and Type 2 diabetes.

Insulin secreted from the pancreas acts on our cells, muscle tissue and liver to regulate both glucose uptake and oxidation process however the excess fat we carry is grossly interfering with our body physiology making the cells become much less responsive to insulin and more difficult for insulin to transport glucose into our cells. The heavier we are, the greater the risk – this is a rule especially for type 2 diabetes.

Obesity – Major Risk Factor for Many types of Cancer:  Scientific epidemiological data and a huge growing body of irrefutable evidence illustrates a clear scientific link between our BMI and weight gain and clinical obesity and the growing risk of many different types of cancers leading to an increased risk of cancer mortality.

The American Institute of Cancer Research reviewed the links between being overweight, obese people and cancer. These scientific findings are illustrating NOW, how important it is to eat clean, keep healthy and fit and exercise, training yourself for optimum health and staying lean to assure that you are maintaining your BMI into safe and optimum levels.

The info graphic below illustrates how cancers are promoted aggressively by undesirable weight gain and how obesity tremendously increases the risk for breast, pancreas, kidney, oesophageal, gallbladder, ovarian, endometrial, and  colorectal cancers, to name just a few.

Please see below the American Institute of Cancer Research obesity-cancer info-graphic:

Obesity – A Major Risk Factor in Cardiovascular disease:Excessive weight is one of the most wide spread cardiovascular risk factors when it comes to cardiovascular disease. Obesity leads to health hazards, including cardiovascular disease – mainly heart disease and stroke.

In 2010 only a number of 179,078 died (2012 British Heart Foundation report, page 19) due to circulatory system conditions.

Obesity is directly associated with insulin resistance, higher oxidative stress and increased levels of different inflammatory markers which ultimately lead to body-dysfunction and various (some lethal) diseases.  Obesity has been increasing in epidemic proportions and people who carry excessive weight may develop hypertension, diabetes and atherosclerosis.

These are very dangerous conditions that put you at high risk of cardiovascular disease.

Please see bellow potential mechanisms via which weight gain and obesity can influence the structure and function of the heart.

I hope that you can see why, unhealthy weight gain is a very serious pathology on its own.

This is the reason why weight loss is not just about losing weight through counting calories and exercise more but really about an integrated approach and lifestyle expertise, advanced nutrition interventions and specific exercise knowledge that supports your body in an optimum way taking into account all the risk factors in a comprehensive and integrated manner as a whole – not just weight loss.

Successful weight loss requires individualised and complex approaches because there are many factors involved and must take into account where you are at NOW regarding the factors mentioned just above – and decide where you want to BE!
