The Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, had made his first announcement on 16 Mar 2020.

He will be providing a daily update on the situation through a press conference.

New updates on the actions taken by the British government will also be revealed by the Prime Minister.

Current Status Of Coronavirus COVID-19 Outbreak In UK And London

As of 19 Mar 2020, a total of 2,626 cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in the United Kingdom.

An estimated 152 new cases of the virus are reported in the country every day.

Thus far, 52 patients have recovered successfully.

The death count as of the latest report from the Public Health England system is 104.

18 March 2020 marked the biggest concern, with 676 new cases of COVID-19 reported.

England has the majority of cases related to COVID-19 in the UK.

A total of 1,196 cases of COVID-19 currently affect patients in London and the surrounding regions of England.

How The UK Is Responding To The Pandemic

The UK is rapidly implementing a range of strategies in order to gain more control over the COVID-19 pandemic.

Here is an overview of some recent events published by the UK government as a way of helping to reduce the spreading of the COVID-19 infection:

  • A nationwide closure of all theatres was requested on 17 March 2020.

The announcement was sent to the Society of London Theatre, also known as the SOLT.

The society is involved with hundreds of different theatres throughout the UK.

The SOLT did reply and confirm that the decision was definitely not easy to make, but it is a critical part of helping with the current pandemic being faced.

  • During the afternoon of 16 Mar 2020, Boris Johnson, Prime Minister, announced that all contact that is non-essential need to be avoided as far as possible.

The Prime Minister advised the local population to start working from home if possible.

Individuals are also advised not to visit theatres, clubs, or any type of pub.

Any travel that is considered the non-essential need to be avoided too.

  • Matt Hancock, Health Secretary, also had a meeting at the Cabinet Office on 16 March to provide an overview of stricter measures that need to be implemented to tackle the coronavirus epidemic.

No comments were made regarding these measures by the Health Secretary or the Chief Medical Officer.

  • Goldsmith University also suspended all face-to-face teaching until further notice.
  • Award ceremonies in the UK have been put to hold until further notice too.
  • Some GP practices have started to cancel providing face-to-face appointments to patients.
  • Schools were closed

These are only some of the measures that have already been taken.

While it may seem drastic, it is crucial to understand that these are absolutely necessary to minimise the spreading of the COVID-19 virus.

The UK has also announced that they are changing the way they are fighting the COVID-19 virus.

At first, it would be thought that a herd immunity might have worked.

This is where a large proportion of the population is allowed to become ill.

Immunity is built up by those who got sick.

In normal circumstances, however, vaccinations are used.

In this case, no vaccination is available.

The virus is still new, and no vaccination has yet been discovered.

Officials from the UK government agree that relying on herd immunisation with the COVID-19 outbreak is no longer considered a safe approach.

It has been suggested that the current strategy presented by the UK would have led to the death of at least 260,000 citizens – our UK government acts strongly to prevent this to happen.

What Is Coronavirus?

The first case of the virus was only reported to the World Health Organization a few months ago.

There was confusion during the initial case.

It was only later identified that a novel coronavirus was the infectious pathogen.

The “novel” term is used to declare the fact that the virus has not yet been previously identified.

Previous pandemics where a coronavirus caused serious concern in several countries involved a virus pathogen that spread from an animal to a human.

A Himalayan palm civet was considered the cause behind the SARS-CoV virus.

With the MERS-CoV, it was thought that the virus spread from a dromedary camel to a human.

Bats were also considered a possibility during the time.

With the new COVID-19 virus, things are still very unclear.

Researchers have officially named the new novel coronavirus SARS-Cov-2, due to the similarities it has with a previous coronavirus that causes a healthcare pandemic.

At the moment, there isn’t too much data to suggest the exact origin of the SARS-CoV-2 or COVID-19 virus.

Researchers have suggested that it is likely to have originated from an animal source too, similar to as with the previous serious coronavirus epidemics the world had faced in the past5.

There are some reports that suggest the coronavirus might have originated from a wet market in the Wuhan city of China6.

Here, exotic animals and fish are farmed and stacked into cages.

These are only speculations.

Further research is still needed to provide more accurate evidence on which animal might have transmitted the COVID-19 virus to a human.

What Are The Main Symptoms Of COVID-19?

Due to the rising prevalence of COVID-19, especially in such a short time span, it is crucial that you acknowledge yourself with the symptoms.

Remember that this is a virus that has some similar features as the coronaviruses that have already been known to man.

The problem is, due to the new type of coronavirus, it is difficult to treat the condition and even harder to create an effective vaccination.

You need to recognise signs of COVID-19 early on.

This helps to ensure you do not cause a further increase in the current rate at which the virus is being spread throughout London and the remainder of the UK.

Several publications have made the common symptoms associated with COVID-19 available to the general public.

It is crucial for you to learn more about these symptoms.

This ensures you can identify them in yourself.

It also ensures you can recognise when a loved one, co-worker, or someone in your surroundings may express signs of the COVID-19.

You should call 111 and report your case.

Based on the NHS advice, you should tell the helpline everything about your symptoms and agree with them if you will remain at home.

The NHS has a helpline that can assist in cases where the patient feels that they are unable to cope with their symptoms at home.

The 111 helplines can be called if you feel that your symptoms are becoming worse.

The NHS will act accordingly to ensure you can gain access to the healthcare services required.

You are also advised to remain home if you feel any of these symptoms develop.

If you are the only person with symptoms, remain home for a minimum period of seven days.

If other people are present in your home, you should remain home for a minimum period of 14 days.

COVID-19

Other symptoms that you could also notice including a runny nose and a sore throat.

Some people may have signs of pneumonia too.

Difficulty breathing is only found in more severe cases of COVID-19 infection.

How Is COVID-19 Diagnosed?

Diagnosis of COVID-19 is essential in the fight against the pandemic.

Failure to gain an early diagnosis for the disease makes it more likely for you to spread the virus to more people.

It is important that you understand self-diagnosis should not be made.

If you do develop symptoms, it is generally advised that you remain home.

Still, a diagnosis can be very helpful.

According to one publication8, there is currently concern about adequate testing mechanisms throughout the world.

This does make it harder to accurately diagnose people with COVID-19.

The main issue here is that faster diagnosis techniques are needed in order to further prevent the disease from spreading.

Laboratory testing is currently the preferred mechanism used to test for the COVID-19 virus.

This is an official recommendation that the World Health Organization has submitted9.

A blood sample of the patient is used in order to facilitate the testing procedure.

This will help the laboratory determine if the newly discovered COVID-19 virus is present in the patient’s body.

Several other testing methods are currently being evaluated.

This would help to speed up the process of testing and diagnosing the disease.

Corona Virus Antibody Tests

Both immunoassay and molecular testing mechanisms are currently being considered.

An immunoassay is considered highly sensitive, and these tests are specific.

They help in the detection of antibodies and antigens.

An antibody tests is a very efficient but, relatively cheap therefore, it will be very useful in detecting changes related to corona virus in an evidence based manner.

There are also several institutes and universities working on methods to provide faster and more efficient diagnostic tools.

At the moment, an in vitro diagnostic test seem to have potential.

This mechanism would detect SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acid.

This is a type of molecular assays testing procedure.

More than 200 expressions of interest submissions have been received for the use of this particular diagnostic tool at the time.

Who Are At Most Risk For COVID-19?

Some people seem to be at a higher risk of being infected with the COVID-19 virus.

For this reason, you should educate yourself on the most important risk factors.

This can help you determine just how much of a risk you have.

Furthermore, some people are also at a higher risk of experiencing serious complications when they become infected with the new novel coronavirus.

People who are most vulnerable in terms of infection and complications include:

  • Pregnant women
  • People with a weakened immune system
  • People who have a long-term chronic health condition
  • Breastfeed babies
  • People who are 70 years or older

  • AIDS, which is caused by the HIV virus. This is an acquired infection that destroys white blood cells in your body.

In turn, your immune system becomes significantly weaker.

This means you will be less likely to have an immune system that can effectively fight against the COVID-19 virus.

  • Severe combined immunodeficiency is another important condition to consider.

This type of condition is something that a child is born with.

There is a consistent fear of infections in these children.

Children and adults with SCID are at a higher risk of COVID-19 infection.

  • A temporary acquired immune deficiency may also contribute to a higher risk.

This includes people who are currently undergoing treatment for cancer, diabetes etc.

Total Coronavirus Cases In China – Whats The Actual Ratio?

China is the country where the coronavirus originally came from.

It is thought that the virus was first transferred from an animal source at a “wet market” to a human subject.

Due to the origin of the virus being China, most reported cases also still seem to stem from the country.

Counts of causes related to coronavirus, particularly COVID-19, is already closing in on 100,000, according to data on the WorldoMeters13 platform.

As of 17 Mar 2020, there are 80,881 confirmed cases of coronavirus in China.

Among the 80,881 confirmed cases of COVID-19, a total of 68,709 have been able to effectively recover from the condition to date.

The total number of deaths reported by China is 3,226.

However, with 3405 recorded deaths up to this point Italy surpassed China.

Currently, 8,946 people are reported to be infected with the COVID-19 virus in China.

An estimated 36% of these are either serious or critical.

The remainder 64% have a mild condition and are very likely to recover.

Recent reports have noted some confusion regarding the actual count for coronavirus cases in China.

One report14 claims that there is confusion as to how China counts for cases of coronavirus.

There is also some speculation that China may not be revealing the actual number of coronavirus cases that have been reported in the country.

If this is true it really makes things a lot more difficult since the grossly underreported number of deaths can make professionals underestimate the virus effects thus, provide us with a false sense of security.

Extra Dangers Of Corona Virus

There are several cases reported thus far where the COVID-19 virus did not cause serious effects.

A majority of individuals affected thus far were able to recover successfully from the virus.

With this in mind, there were still a couple of more serious cases reported.

For this reason, you should ensure you understand the dangers that may come with an infection from this particular virus.

Respiratory implications would be considered the most important dangers associated with the COVID-19 virus.

There have been reported of people who were unable to breathe properly when they were infected with the virus.

  • Favipiravir: This is one of the latest drugs that seem to be used. One report claims that 1,425 patients infected with COVID-19 were successfully cured using Favipiravir.

The announcement was made by China health officials22.

The drug reduced the fever duration from 4.2 days to about 2.5 days among patients infected with this new coronavirus23.

Reports claim that there were no clear side-effects, yielding this as a potentially safe treatment option.

  • Remdesivir: The Remdesivir drug was first made about a decade ago in a laboratory. It showed hopes of fighting against general coronaviruses.

The drug was effective at fighting off both the SARS-CoV and the MERS-CoV.

It works by preventing virus replication.

Now, the drug is making a comeback and quickly send to various areas of the planet.

It may help with the fight against the new COVID-19 virus too since it holds similarities to the SARS-CoV coronavirus24.

The specialist working with National Institute of Health (NIH), rear admiral Richard Childs reported that four patients with an average of 75 years old have been cured and are corona virus free.

No adverse events were noted when the drug was given to patients over a period of seven days.

  • Chloroquine Phosphate: Another antiviral drug with potential is Chloroquine Phosphate.

A recent study25 found that Chloroquine Phosphate holds potential as a treatment against the COVID-19 coronavirus.

It also helps with treating pneumonia associated with an infection with the COVID-19 virus.

Antivirals Or Natural Supplements To Fight COVID-19

Strengthening the immune system is currently a critical factor in the fight against the coronavirus.

There are many strategies that have already been suggested.

You might have heard that you need to become more physically active, for example.

This is a very useful way of boosting your immunity.

Adopting a healthy diet that is free of toxic ingredients is another helpful option.

Apart from these, there are additional specific strategies that you can follow to strengthen up your immune system and equip yourself against the COVID-19 virus.

Boost Your Immunity Against Coronavirus, Cold and Flu

In this section, I am going to take a look at a few helpful strategies to help you in the fight against this new pandemic.

Some of the strategies I share with you here will be related to antiviral techniques.

These help to fight directly against viruses, including the common cold.

Other strategies I share will rather assist in enhancing your immune system.

When you have a stronger immune system, your body becomes more capable of defending itself against invading pathogens.

You should not self-diagnose and keep in touch with your NHS professionals, but, if you don’t have any sensitivities and allergies (you must check on it) these strategies could help you become significantly stronger.

  • If you suspect any sensitivities or allergies towards any of these choices discussed below you must not use them.

Elderberry

My first recommendation is elderberry.

This is a fruit that you can find in various forms.

Studies have shown that elderberry might be useful in helping you fight against a cold.

In one study15, researchers found those who took an elderberry supplement had reduced duration of cold symptoms.

The symptoms experienced by these individuals were also less severe.

While elderberry has not been tested against the COVID-19 infection, it does seem to hold potential at helping to reduce symptoms of general colds.

The results were compared to a placebo group.

This was a double-blind study.

Goldenseal

Another option for fighting against infection is goldenseal.

The scientific name would be Hydrastis Canadensis.

This is another plant extract that may hold potential, particularly when it comes to warding off viral infections.

In one study16, researchers showed that the use of Hydrastis Canadensis extracts effectively inhibited the growth of influenza A virus.

When used as an alcohol-free tincture allows it to go through the trachea and other parts of your respiratory system; therefore, it might be helpful.

Before using it, make sure that you research the side effects first.

High Dose Vitamin C

A megadose of vitamin C may be helpful in some cases.

It is possible to obtain a megadose of vitamin C through oral administration.

Alternatively, a megadose can be delivered through intravenous administration too.

The university hospital of Wuhan registered high doses of intravenous vitamin C as a phase 2 clinical trial through professor ZhiYong Pend MD.

He is working for the Department of Critical Care Medicine in the same hospital.

Dr ZhiYong Peng described his experience working with high doses of intravenous Vit C in treating severe acute respiratory diseases (SARI) as very promising.

The outcome of the clinical trial will be made public in the next six months.

Even though a megadose of vitamin C would generally be considered safe, there are still a number of risks that you need to take note of17.

Taking a high dose of vitamin C over a long term puts you at risk of kidney stones, for example.

This may lead to complications like urinary tract infections.

Bone spurs have also been linked to significantly high doses of vitamin C over a long period of time.

Additionally, you may alter the way your body absorbs some of the other nutrients when you take too much vitamin C.

The primary concerns here would include vitamin B12, as well as copper.

Furthermore, be careful with your iron levels.

If you take very high levels of vitamin C, then you may suffer from a surge in iron levels.

This could also lead to some adverse effects.

Appropriate levels of iron are optimum in terms of health support whilst large doses of iron would be very toxic to your body.

Multivitamin Supplementation

To equip your body for the months to come, you need to get your immune system to become stronger and more efficient.

This means ensuring you get all of the nutrients your body needs each day.

Getting an adequate dose of every single nutrient can be difficult from food alone but, with professional support – it is very possible.

However, if you find it hard, try to add a multivitamin supplement to your daily routine too.

But, you must avoid synthetic formulations since one beta carotene study had to be stopped due to an increased cancer rate whilst naturally occurring supplements had the opposite effect.

A general multivitamin might be useful, but do take note of the specific vitamins, minerals, and other ingredients that are added to the formula.
