Take a load off.

Lean back, put your feet up.

It all sounds delightfully relaxing.

And we all know that being relaxed is the how we avoid body pains and stresses, right?

Unfortunately, not always.

Time to Stand for Change. Or Is Your Back Too Sore?

The more developed we become as a society, the more we sit.

We sit to eat, we sit behind the steering wheels in our cars, or we sit on the tube.

Ironically, we should actually be grateful for those days when the London underground is so full we have to stand, because at least our bodies are getting straightened out, we’ve not curved or hunched over like wizened troglodytes.

Then we spend most of our working day sitting behind a computer while the muscles in our body are either over worked, or completely forgotten.

And so they quietly brood and seethe.

Until one day we creak out of bed and hobble around with back, shoulders and hips that are so out of alignment we look like we’re about to show off our unbeknownst Disco moves.

Our desk-bound lifestyle is supposedly balanced out with a solid exercise regime.

Whether its hitting it hard in the gym, racking up miles on the bike or pounding the pavement with our pals.

But this intense heat and repetitive jarring motion on the body is doing nothing to eliminate body pain levels, strengthen your joints in a balanced way, and de-stress your already overburdened and misshapen muscles.

But people have jobs to do, even if they have to spend three quarters of the day sitting at their desks staring at the computer screen – it’s how we live.

Who doesn’t delight in spending time with families or loved ones, while winding down from a long day at their London office?

And there’s nothing wrong with going to the gym, or cracking up new personal bests on your bike or breaking out those running shoes!

But… and it’s a big but… without awareness of and devotion to mitigating body imbalances and poor postural patterns we’ve built up over a lifetime of slouching, slacking and intense exercise regimes (sometimes just too repetitive), we’re in for serious pain and unnecessary stress over the long term.

The main risk factors with regard to lower back pain and Lumbar Disc Degeneration (as assessed by the Department of Twin Research and Genetic Epidemiology, King’s College, London) are obesity and lack of functional exercise.

It’s not a matter of removing modes of behaviour, or not just yet.
